THRIVE News Updates

2024 In Review

In 2024, THRIVE made significant strides in its mission to assist individuals in managing and overcoming chronic health conditions. Our dedicated team has been at the forefront of research, innovation, and community engagement, all aimed at promoting better health outcomes.

Pioneering Research

Our commitment to advancing medical knowledge is evident through the publication of 23 scientific papers in 2024. These studies have explored a wide range of topics, including mental health nursing, dietary impacts on early childhood, hypertension management, and the genetic underpinnings of various health conditions. Notable contributions include:

  • Cardiovascular Health: Investigations into the effects of renin–angiotensin system inhibition on blood pressure and kidney function provide potential pathways for hypertension management.
  • Genomic Studies: A comprehensive genome-wide study focusing on kidney function among individuals of African and American ancestry enhances our understanding of genetic influences on renal health.
  • Digital Health Interventions: The development of an online skills training platform for autistic adults, utilising a participatory approach, highlights the importance of inclusive digital solutions.
  • Mental Health Nursing: Studies exploring attitudes, empathy, and caring efficacy towards consumers with co-existing mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Nutritional Science: Research identifying predictors of free sugar intake trajectories in early childhood offers insights into dietary habits and their long-term health implications.

Advancing Education

Our four PhD candidates have made remarkable progress, refining their research topics to address critical areas in chronic health management. Their work promises to contribute valuable insights and practical solutions to the field. Our two physiotherapy students, Lauren Barrot and Abby Warner, have recently completed their honours degrees. They are now both working in rural communities and are in the process of preparing their research findings for publication. This development underscores our commitment to supporting regional healthcare. In addition, more than 100 Victorian practitioners and clinical researchers received Motivational Interviewing training, equipping them with essential skills to better serve their patients and communities. This training is part of our ongoing efforts to upskill regional healthcare workers and improve health outcomes in underserved areas.

Community Engagement and Data Collection

We have initiated a comprehensive population study, gathering more than 200 responses to date. This data is crucial in understanding the diverse needs of our community and tailoring our interventions accordingly. The development of our digital health application is well underway, with invaluable input from both consumers and healthcare professionals. This collaborative approach ensures our end product will be user-friendly and effective in assisting individuals to manage their health conditions. We are actively seeking more participants to ensure a robust and representative dataset.

Team Developments

In 2024, two members of our leadership team were honoured with the title of Distinguished Professor. Congratulations to Shane Thomas and Colette Browning on this well-deserved recognition. Their dedication to advancing global health through research and practical interventions continues to make a profound impact.

As our research activities ramp up, we are pleased to welcome three accomplished new researchers to our team: Dr. Leo Bell, Dr. Arinola Akinnibosun, and soon-to-be Dr. Pritimoy Das. Their expertise aligns seamlessly with our mission, and we look forward to the valuable contributions they will make.
